The Mutable Gift of Virgo and the Weight of Change

Virgo season opens with the sun ruled Decan from 23rd August up to 2nd September, then from then on, Venus takes over up to the 11th September, until Mercury, the natural ruler of Virgo takes over the third and last Decan up into 22nd September or so, where the chariot moves on to Libra.

I’ve had always a complicated relationship with this sign, not with people who were sun born under the influence of this constellation. But because Virgo in the whole house system falls in my 8th house. In astrology, this house is infamous of its difficulty and karmic lessons that haunt its native, crippling him with all sorts of demons that if not addressed properly might seriously threaten the ongoing balance of this cosmic dance.

Virgo, an earth sign belongs to the vibrant earth, the kind of earth that’s willing to give off its natural resources to the world. It’s the reaping grounds full of fruits and legumes, the literal garden of Eden that promises all virtues and goodness.

The ruler of the sign, Mercury, shares its rulership with Gemini. Both Gemini and Virgo share a different side of Mercury. If Mercury in Gemini is the planet of aloofness, bringing the airiness in Gemini with a touch of intellect, knowledge, thoughts, wittiness and language, Mercury sees itself with Virgo grounded in the earth, adopting a rather analytical approach to life. This might be, however, the reason why most Virgo influenced people tend to obsess over things, unfinished things, and go over finished things frantically again.

Virgo’s rarely enjoy letting go, they go against the nature of their own sign. Since virgo happens at the last section of summer, it is a goodbye to the translucent star, the sun, in its glorious sky journey.

Because after Virgo is finished, Libra, the beginning of autumn will take over. And autumn promises the incoming darkness taking over now, releasing the sun from its duty and urging it to incubate back in the lower world. The light of the day becomes shorter and the darkness increasing. And so, by virtue, Virgo is those last brimming sun beams that we see of it at this time of year.

No wonder why, during Virgo season, some days come out as cool and moist, and all of the sudden, the weather returns to an intense heat. Depending on where you are in the northern hemisphere, you’d most likely notice how the sun refuses to let go.

The dying ambers of sunshine willing themselves to life again, refusing that their time is soon to be over. The sun, of course, will not completely die, but its capacity at giving life and light will no longer be the main attraction, and this hurt the sun’s ego beyond measure, and so it looks down upon the sign which delivers the last farewell to a season which knew nothing but intense heat and an amazing celebration of the lion’s mare.

This is the nature of mutable signs, they take on the blame of delivering the end of a season.

It is the classic Lana Del Rey wonderful musings with ‘’Kiss me hard before you go, Summertime sadness,’’ it’s the tragedy that begins with the sun itself helming the first ten days of the Virgo sign, the sun, again and again, each and every year hopes to remain a little in power after its triumph with Cancer and Leo seasons, now with Virgo signaling the end of its rulership, Virgo gives it a sub-ruling position.

Venus takes over to remind us that beauty can also be found in endings, not just beginnings. Then Mercury, the natural ruler, takes charge for the last intense deliverance, dealing with the process of change, the only and true constant in the universe with a bureaucratic  and dedicated mode.

They’re the odd one out, mutable signs. The fixed signs are usually friendly with the cardinal ones, because they engage together in the promise of that very season. They often see the one standing at the mutable stage as a betrayer. There was an energy given to the mutable season, and what it does with it? It formulates it, it changes it, destroying its essence and making it ready for the next journey. But without mutable signs, our chariots and therefore our lives will remain tragically stagnant.

In fact, without mutable signs, we would never learn the art of letting go. The art of transformation and the beauty of seeing a past season and an upcoming one merging. It’s the blurring of the lines and the chaos erupting in order to make order for the next cardinal sign to appear.

It is not so much a design of Virgo to bury themselves in the analytical just because of enjoyment or nature, but because it is the only way to remain functional in the chaos. Other mutable signs develop their own methods to dissolve their season and welcome the next one with not much gravity or in a sense, resentment.

Virgos learn very early on that they’re dealing with a very powerful ego at play, and the intensity of the situation demands not only high efficiency but a profound detachment, only then can the virgo succeed at delivering their part to the world, and only then, the fixed, the cardinal and whomever chose to condemn the Virgo learn of its value to humanity.

Eventually, the virgin is held prized for her own purity of thoughts and actions, devoted to the service of cosmos without self disillusionment or dissolution. Virgo alone holds the power to work under immense pressure, and only at a Virgo gate can light and darkness meet and sit on a friendly table, and perhaps learn to enjoy one last beautiful sunset.
